Leopard 2 FCS (Heckabweiser) Overhaul: Dynamic Elevation Angles and Emergency Manual OverrideDescription / Statement of the Issue: Dear Developers and Community, Currently, the entire Leopard 2 series in War Thunder (including Swedish Strv 122s and the Italian Leopard 2A7HU) features a simulation of the automatic barrel elevation system over the engine deck (Heckabweiser System). However, the current in-game implementation suffers from two major flaws that severely distort the vehicle’s real-world capabilities and negatively impact top-tier gameplay: Overly Rough Geometric Dead Zone. Right now, the gun is forced to elevate by +3 degrees across a massive fixed sector (roughly 150 degrees in the rear arc, or ~75 degrees to the left and right of the hull’s longitudinal rear axis). The gun rises into the sky long before the barrel physically approaches the engine deck. Even when the turret is rotated almost completely sideways (facing the deep flank), the FCS blocks depression despite there being plenty of physical clearance for the barrel. In reality, this system operates on a complex dynamic curve that tracks the actual contour of the hull, rather than cutting off a huge arbitrary sector. Lack of Emergency FCS Mode Simulation. In War Thunder, ground vehicles are always modeled in a fully operational state with the stabilizer enabled. However, on a real Leopard 2, switching the Fire Control System to emergency or manual mode (Turm Aus or Beobachten observation mode) bypasses the electronic safety constraints. By utilizing manual mechanical traverses or backup hydraulic/electrical systems, the gunner can depress the barrel significantly lower—down to physical contact with the hull—to make an emergency point-blank shot. Proposed Solution: To improve realism and enhance the gameplay experience of top-tier German, Swedish, and Italian MBTs, I propose the following: Option A (Primary): Link the “Heckabweiser” safety restriction to the existing in-game “Toggle Stabilizer” key. When a player disables the weapon stabilizer, the tank’s FCS should simulate an emergency/manual override. In this state, the rigid electronic safety restriction forcing the barrel up in the rear arc should be lifted. The player would gain the ability to depress the gun lower (until the 3D model of the barrel physically collides with the hull structure), sacrificing on-the-move stabilization in return. Option B (Alternative/Supplementary): Rework the geometry of the “Heckabweiser” dead zone. Shift it from the current rigid “rectangular” block to a dynamic curve mapped directly to the actual clearance between the gun barrel and the engine deck. The gun should only elevate when strictly necessary to clear physical hull obstructions, rather than artificially locking out deep side-flanking angles. Why is this necessary? This addition will not make the Leopard 2 overpowered, as firing on the move without a stabilizer is highly impractical, and manual traverse speeds are significantly lower. However, it will provide players with a fair, realistic tactical tool in critical situations (e.g., when immobilized and being flanked from the rear or sides) and remove a frustrating, artificial mechanic that severely ruins the experience of playing these top-tier vehicles.
